Questions Composers Ask
Is it too late for me?
Not at all. Some of the composers who study with us started in their fifties and sixties, after a whole career doing something else. Honestly, what I'd worry about more is another year going by with your music still sitting in a folder.
I work full-time. Will I have time for this?
Most of the composers who study with us have day jobs, and plenty of them are parents too. About 5 hours a week is enough to make real progress. Tom Edgar is an airline pilot who only gets his flying schedule a month at a time, and he still had three premieres in a single month. Every workshop is recorded, and you're never stuck waiting a week for an answer.
How is this different from YouTube or private lessons?
On YouTube I'm teaching everyone at once. When you study with us, my team and I are looking at your actual scores, with your goals in front of us. With weekly lessons, you wait a week between answers, and the focus is usually just the notes on the page. Here you get feedback whenever you need it, plus a plan for getting your music performed.
How much access do I get to you and your team?
A lot. You can send me and my team of commissioned composers your scores, drafts, and career questions whenever you need to, and we get back to you with personalized video and written feedback within 24 hours, so you never have to save up questions for a weekly lesson. On top of that there's a live workshop every week, and we build your plan with you 1-1 when you start.
I write for soloists, band, choir, or chamber groups, not orchestras. Is this for me?
Yes! We build your plan around the music you actually want to write. Composers who study with us write for soloists, school bands, choirs, chamber groups, and orchestras, and getting your music performed works pretty much the same way for all of them.
Am I good enough yet?
The main thing I look for is a deep passion for writing music and having it shared with the world. If you've got that, you're ready.
I'm busy right now. Should I wait?
No need. Joining the waitlist doesn't start anything. We set your start date around your schedule, and you're in line when a space opens.
How long is the waitlist?
It depends. We keep the studio small so every composer gets personal feedback. That means spaces are limited, and the waitlist hears about them first. We only take on composers we're confident we can help, and after you join, we'll reach out to see if it's a fit.
What does it cost?
A full year of on-demand feedback costs a fraction of one year at a U.S. conservatory. For reference, Juilliard's tuition alone is $57,200 a year. We'll go over the details once we both know it's a fit.
